SN EN 378-2:2017 Certification Requirements Explained
SN EN 378-2:2017
Kälteanlagen und Wärmepumpen - Sicherheitstechnische und umweltrelevante Anforderungen - Teil 2: Konstruktion, Herstellung, Prüfung, Kennzeichnung und Dokumentation
Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Safety and environmental requirements - Part 2: Design, construction, testing, marking and documentation
This European Standard specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants. The term "refrigerating system" used in this European Standard includes heat pumps. This Part 2 of this Standard is applicable to the design, construction and installation of refrigerating systems including piping, components and materials. It includes ancillary equipment not covered in FprEN 378-1:2016, FprEN 378-3:2016 or FprEN 378-4:2016 which is directly associated with these systems. It also specifies requirements for testing, commissioning, marking and documentation. Requirements for secondary heat transfer circuits are excluded except for any protection requirements associated with the refrigerating system. Ancillary equipment includes, for example, fans, fan motors, electrical motors and transmission assemblies for open compressor systems. This standard applies: a) to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard, e.g. ISO 13043; b) to secondary cooling or heati
SN EN 378-2:2017 is a standard published by CEN that sets forth safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems and heat pumps. It applies to manufacturers, designers, and operators within the refrigerant industry.
Purpose and objectives
The primary objective of the SN EN 378-2:2017 standard is to ensure the safety and environmental protection of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. By establishing comprehensive requirements for design, construction, testing, and documentation, the standard aims to minimize risks associated with refrigerants. Additionally, it promotes sustainable practices in the industry, helping to reduce environmental impacts while ensuring the reliable performance of refrigeration and heat pump systems.
Scope: who must comply
SN EN 378-2:2017 applies to a wide array of stakeholders in the refrigerating systems and heat pumps industry, including:
- Manufacturers of refrigeration equipment
- Designers and engineers involved in system design
- Installers and service providers responsible for maintenance
- Operators of refrigerating systems in commercial and industrial sectors
This standard is particularly relevant in the context of Energy & Heat Transfer, where compliance is essential for ensuring safe and efficient operation of these systems while adhering to environmental protection regulations.
How SN EN 378-2:2017 relates to other standards
The SN EN 378-2:2017 standard is part of a broader framework of standards related to refrigeration and heat pumps. Key related standards include:
- FprEN 378-1:2016: This standard outlines general aspects and fundamental principles for refrigerating systems.
- FprEN 378-3:2016: This focuses on the specific requirements for systems using flammable refrigerants.
- FprEN 378-4:2016: This standard addresses the application of refrigerants in secondary heat transfer circuits, complementing the main standard.
Revision history and current status
The SN EN 378-2:2017 was published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in 2017 and represents the most current revision of the standard. This revision included updates to align with advancements in technology and to enhance safety and environmental protection measures. Changes made in this revision reflect ongoing improvements in industry practices and regulatory requirements.
