Understanding SN EN 378-2:2017 for Refrigerating Systems and Heat Pumps

Introduction

SN EN 378-2:2017

Kälteanlagen und Wärmepumpen - Sicherheitstechnische und umweltrelevante Anforderungen - Teil 2: Konstruktion, Herstellung, Prüfung, Kennzeichnung und Dokumentation

Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Safety and environmental requirements - Part 2: Design, construction, testing, marking and documentation

INB

This European Standard specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants. The term "refrigerating system" used in this European Standard includes heat pumps. This Part 2 of this Standard is applicable to the design, construction and installation of refrigerating systems including piping, components and materials. It includes ancillary equipment not covered in FprEN 378-1:2016, FprEN 378-3:2016 or FprEN 378-4:2016 which is directly associated with these systems. It also specifies requirements for testing, commissioning, marking and documentation. Requirements for secondary heat transfer circuits are excluded except for any protection requirements associated with the refrigerating system. Ancillary equipment includes, for example, fans, fan motors, electrical motors and transmission assemblies for open compressor systems. This standard applies: a) to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard, e.g. ISO 13043; b) to secondary cooling or heati

SN EN 378-2:2017 is a European standard that outlines essential safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems and heat pumps. This standard is vital for ensuring the safe design, construction, testing, marking, and documentation of these systems, relevant to various stakeholders in the energy and heat transfer industry.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN 378-2:2017 covers

SN EN 378-2:2017 specifies requirements aimed at safeguarding persons and property, while also addressing environmental protection concerns in the context of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. The standard applies to the design, construction, and installation of these systems, including all relevant components like piping and materials. It also encompasses the operational aspects such as maintenance, repair, and the recovery of refrigerants. However, it explicitly excludes vehicle air conditioning systems, which are covered by specific product standards like ISO 13043, as well as certain secondary heat transfer circuits unless they pertain to the refrigerating system's protection. The standard also details requirements for ancillary equipment that supports these systems, such as electrical motors and fans.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN 378-2:2017

The primary audience for SN EN 378-2:2017 includes manufacturers, designers, and installers of refrigerating systems and heat pumps across various sectors within the Energy & Heat Transfer industry. This standard is relevant for companies of all sizes, from small enterprises to large multinational corporations, as well as regulatory bodies and compliance officers who oversee safety and environmental standards. Additionally, engineers and technicians involved in the operation, maintenance, and servicing of these systems must familiarize themselves with the guidelines set forth in this standard to ensure compliance and safety in their operations.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Safety Standards: Establishes safety protocols to protect personnel and property from risks associated with refrigerating systems.
  • Environmental Protection: Provides guidelines for the safe recovery of refrigerants to minimize environmental impact.
  • Design and Construction: Details essential criteria for the design, construction, and installation of refrigerating systems and their components.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Outlines procedures for testing and commissioning systems to ensure they meet required safety and operational standards.
  • Marking and Documentation: Specifies necessary labeling, marking, and documentation requirements for compliance verification.
  • Maintenance Protocols: Includes guidelines for the regular maintenance and repair of systems to ensure ongoing safety and efficiency.

These requirements are typically audited through rigorous assessments that check for compliance with safety and environmental standards, ensuring adherence throughout the system lifecycle.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN 378-2:2017

Implementing SN EN 378-2:2017 involves several key steps that organizations should follow to ensure compliance. First, conduct a gap analysis to identify areas where existing practices may fall short of the standard's requirements. Following this, organizations should develop comprehensive documentation that outlines procedures and policies in alignment with the standard. Training sessions should then be organized for staff involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of refrigerating systems to ensure they understand the new requirements. After staff training, an internal audit should be conducted to evaluate adherence to the standard, followed by a certification audit to achieve compliance. It’s important to note that a dedicated implementation guide can provide further details on each of these steps for a successful transition.

Related standards

  • SN EN 378-1: This part focuses on the basic safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems but does not cover design and construction specifics.
  • SN EN 378-3: Addresses the systems' operational safety and maintenance requirements, complementing SN EN 378-2 by providing guidelines for ongoing system integrity.
  • SN EN 378-4: Focuses on the recovery of refrigerants, which ties directly into the environmental protection aspects outlined in SN EN 378-2.
  • ISO 13043: Pertains specifically to vehicle air conditioning systems, providing a distinct set of standards separate from those for stationary refrigerating systems.
