Overview of SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016
SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016
Sicherheit von Maschinen - Ortsfeste Zugänge zu maschinellen Anlagen - Teil 2: Arbeitsbühnen und Laufstege (ISO 14122-2:2016)
Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 2: Working platforms and walkways (ISO 14122-2:2016)
ISO 14122-2:2016 gives requirements for non-powered working platforms and walkways which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, sliding) and movable parts of those fixed means of access. NOTE 1 "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. ISO 14122-2:2016 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. working platforms, walkways) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. NOTE 2 Where no local regulation or standards exist, this part of ISO 14122 can be used for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122-1 to give the requirements for walking platforms and walkways. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially
=== SECTION 1 ===
What SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016 covers
SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016 provides comprehensive guidelines for the design, construction, and maintenance of permanent means of access, including working platforms and walkways, associated with stationary machinery. The standard specifies minimum requirements to ensure safety, focusing on non-powered access solutions. It also covers adjustable components, such as foldable and sliding parts, that facilitate safe access. Importantly, the standard does not apply to powered means of access (like lifts or escalators) and is primarily concerned with fixed installations that require tools for removal.
=== SECTION 2 ===
Who needs to comply with SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016
Compliance with SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016 is crucial for a wide range of stakeholders in the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) sector. This includes manufacturers of machinery, facility managers, safety officers, and maintenance personnel in industries that utilize stationary equipment. Companies of all sizes, from small workshops to large manufacturing plants, must adhere to this standard to ensure safe access to machinery for their employees. Additionally, regulatory bodies may reference this standard to enforce compliance and ensure workplace safety.
=== SECTION 3 ===
Key requirements
- Design Safety: Requires that working platforms and walkways are designed to minimize risks associated with access to machinery.
- Construction Standards: Mandates specific construction practices to ensure durability and safety of the access solutions.
- Adjustability: Addresses the design and safety of adjustable components, ensuring they are robust and reliable.
- Load Capacity: Specifies load-bearing requirements to ensure platforms and walkways can support personnel and equipment effectively.
- Maintenance Guidelines: Provides recommendations for regular maintenance to uphold safety and functionality.
These requirements are typically audited through internal assessments and compliance checks to ensure adherence to safety standards.

How to implement SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016
Implementing SN EN ISO 14122-2:2016 involves several key steps. First, conduct a gap analysis to identify areas where current practices do not meet the standard. Next, develop comprehensive documentation that outlines the design, construction, and maintenance protocols for working platforms and walkways. Employees should receive training on these protocols to ensure compliance and promote a culture of safety. Following training, an internal audit should be conducted to verify adherence to the standards before pursuing a certification audit. This structured approach helps organizations systematically integrate the standard into their operations and maintain continuous compliance.
=== SECTION 5 ===
Related standards
- ISO 14122-1: This standard complements ISO 14122-2 by providing requirements for general means of access to machinery, enhancing overall safety protocols.
- ISO 13849: Focuses on the safety-related parts of control systems, which is crucial for ensuring that machinery operates safely when accessed via working platforms and walkways.
- ISO 9001: A quality management standard that can support organizations in establishing a systematic approach to compliance and continuous improvement in accessing machinery safely.
- ISO 45001: This standard addresses occupational health and safety management systems, promoting a safe working environment alongside the access requirements outlined in ISO 14122-2.
