Comprehensive Overview of SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016

SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016

Sicherheit von Maschinen - Ortsfeste Zugänge zu maschinellen Anlagen - Teil 4: Ortsfeste Steigleiter (ISO 14122-4:2016)

Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 4: Fixed ladders (ISO 14122-4:2016)

SWISSMEM

ISO 14122-4:2016 gives requirements for fixed ladders which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, slidable) and movable parts of fixed ladder systems. NOTE 1 "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. ISO 14122-4:2016 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. fixed ladders) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. NOTE 2 Where no local regulation or standards exists, this part of ISO 14122 may be used also for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122-1 to give the requirements for fixed ladder systems. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially designed to lift persons between two levels. ISO 1412

ISO 14122-4:2016 specifies comprehensive safety requirements for fixed ladders that serve as permanent means of access to machinery. This standard is applicable to both stationary machinery and the associated fixed ladder systems, ensuring safety and accessibility for maintenance and operation.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 covers

SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 outlines the essential safety requirements for fixed ladders installed on stationary machinery. This includes requirements relevant to non-powered adjustable parts, like foldable or slidable components, as well as movable parts of fixed ladder systems. Importantly, the standard delineates criteria that apply when these ladders also form part of a building or civil construction, provided their main function is to facilitate access to machinery. However, it does not cover powered means of access, such as lifts or escalators. This standard is designed to ensure that fixed ladders are safe for use and meet necessary structural integrity guidelines.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016

Compliance with SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 is essential for various stakeholders within the Environment, Health & Safety industry. This includes manufacturers of machinery, construction companies, and facility managers responsible for ensuring safe access to machinery. Companies of all sizes that operate stationary machinery, particularly those in heavy industries, are required to adhere to this standard. Additionally, safety professionals, engineers, and regulatory compliance officers will find it crucial in their roles to ensure that all installations meet the specified safety criteria.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Structural Integrity: Fixed ladders must be designed and installed to support intended loads and resist environmental influences.
  • Dimensions and Spacing: The standard specifies minimum width, rung spacing, and ladder angle to ensure safe and easy access.
  • Safety Features: Requirements for handrails, safety cages, and other safety features are outlined to protect users during access.
  • Installation Guidelines: Clear instructions on how to properly install fixed ladders are provided to prevent misuse and ensure compliance.
  • Maintenance Protocols: Regular inspection and maintenance guidelines are included to ensure ongoing safety and compliance.

These requirements are typically audited through safety inspections and compliance assessments by qualified professionals.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016

Implementing SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 involves a structured approach:

  1. Gap Analysis: Assess current ladder systems against the standard to identify compliance gaps.
  2. Documentation: Develop and maintain documentation that reflects compliance efforts and safety protocols.
  3. Training: Provide training for employees on the new safety protocols and ladder usage to enhance workplace safety.
  4. Internal Audit: Conduct internal audits to verify compliance with the standard and identify areas for improvement.
  5. Certification Audit: Engage with a certification body to achieve formal compliance certification, ensuring the organization meets all necessary safety standards.

=== SECTION 5 ===

Related standards

  • ISO 14122-1: This standard provides foundational requirements for all means of access to machinery, including fixed and portable systems.
  • ISO 14122-2: It focuses on the safety requirements for platforms, walkways, and stairways that accompany fixed ladder systems.
  • ISO 14122-3: This standard outlines the requirements specifically for retractable ladders, which are also considered fixed means of access.
  • EN ISO 14122-1: A European norm that aligns with ISO 14122-1, ensuring regional compliance and safety standards.
  • Directive 2006/42/CE: Relates to machinery safety, establishing essential health and safety requirements that complement the ISO standards.
