Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 4: Fixed ladders (ISO 14122-4:2016)

SWISSMEM

ISO 14122-4:2016 gives requirements for fixed ladders which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, slidable) and movable parts of fixed ladder systems. NOTE 1 "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. ISO 14122-4:2016 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. fixed ladders) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. NOTE 2 Where no local regulation or standards exists, this part of ISO 14122 may be used also for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122-1 to give the requirements for fixed ladder systems. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially designed to lift persons between two levels. ISO 1412

SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on the safety requirements for fixed ladders as permanent means of access to machinery, ensuring user safety and compliance.

Purpose and objectives

The ISO 14122-4:2016 standard aims to establish safety requirements for fixed ladders used as permanent access points to machinery. Its primary objectives include minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries during the use of these ladders, ensuring they are constructed and maintained to meet safety standards, and providing guidance for manufacturers and users about maintenance and usability. By adhering to these standards, businesses can foster a safer working environment and enhance operational efficiency.

Scope: who must comply

This standard is applicable to all organizations that manufacture, install, or use fixed ladders as part of machinery access. It particularly pertains to industries such as manufacturing, construction, and maintenance where fixed ladders are common. Compliance is essential for companies focused on Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) regulations to protect workers and ensure a safe working environment. Organizations of all sizes, from small businesses to large enterprises, must adhere to these guidelines to mitigate risks associated with machinery access.

How SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016 relates to other standards

ISO 14122-4:2016 is part of a broader family of machinery safety standards. It complements standards such as:

  • ISO 14122-1: Safety requirements for permanently installed access systems.
  • ISO 14122-3: Requirements for mobile access equipment safety.
  • Directive 2006/42/CE: EU directive on machinery safety that outlines general safety requirements for machinery, including ladders.

Revision history and current status

The current version of the standard, SN EN ISO 14122-4:2016, was published by ISO and is part of ongoing efforts to standardize safety measures across various industries. This revision includes updates to safety requirements and best practices since the previous version, EN ISO 14122-4:2004, enhancing clarity and usability for compliance. The standard is actively maintained and subject to periodic reviews to ensure it remains relevant and effective in promoting safety in machinery access.
