Comprehensive Overview of SN EN 12464-2:2024 - Lighting of Outdoor Work Places

SN EN 12464-2:2024

Licht und Beleuchtung - Beleuchtung von Arbeitsstätten - Teil 2: Arbeitsplätze im Freien

Light and lighting - Lighting of work places - Part 2: Outdoor work places

INB

This document specifies lighting requirements for humans in outdoor work places, which meet the needs for visual comfort and performance of people having normal, or corrected to normal ophthalmic (visual) capacity. Usual visual tasks and the avoidance of obtrusive light are considered. This document specifies requirements for lighting solutions for most outdoor work places and their associated areas in terms of quantity and quality of illumination. In addition, recommendations are given for good lighting practice. This document does not specify lighting requirements with respect to the safety and health of people at work and has not been prepared in the field of application of Article 153 of Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union although the lighting requirements, as specified in this document, usually fulfil safety needs. NOTE Lighting requirements with respect to the safety and health of workers at work can be contained in Directives based on Article 153 of Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, in national legislation of member states implementing these directives or in other national legislation of member states. This document neither provides specific solutions, nor restricts the designers' freedom from exploring new techniques nor restricts the use of innovative equipment. The illumination can be provided by daylight, electric lighting or a combination of both. This document is not applicable for the lighting of indoor work places and underground mining or emergency lighting. For indoor work places, see EN 12464-1 and for emergency lighting, see EN 1838 and EN 13032-3.

This document outlines the lighting requirements necessary for outdoor workplaces, focusing on visual comfort and performance for individuals with normal or corrected vision. It serves as a crucial guideline for ensuring adequate lighting in various outdoor work environments.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN 12464-2:2024 covers

SN EN 12464-2:2024 specifies essential lighting requirements tailored for outdoor work environments. It addresses the visual needs of individuals, taking into account factors like visual comfort, task performance, and the minimization of glare. This standard applies to various outdoor workplaces, from construction sites to agricultural fields, ensuring that the quality and quantity of illumination are adequate for typical visual tasks. Importantly, it excludes indoor workplaces, underground mining, and emergency lighting scenarios, which are covered by other standards. The standard encourages the use of both natural daylight and electric lighting, allowing for flexibility in design solutions while promoting innovative approaches to outdoor lighting.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN 12464-2:2024

The primary audiences for SN EN 12464-2:2024 include companies operating in the construction materials and buildings sector, as well as industries involving outdoor work environments such as agriculture, construction, and logistics. Compliance is essential for businesses of all sizes, particularly for safety managers, facility managers, and design engineers who are responsible for ensuring workplace safety and optimal lighting conditions. Moreover, regulatory bodies and consultants in these sectors should be familiar with this standard to enhance compliance and promote best practices in outdoor lighting design.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Visual Comfort: The standard emphasizes the need for visual comfort in outdoor workplaces, specifying appropriate lighting levels.
  • Quality and Quantity of Lighting: It provides guidelines on the required illumination levels for typical outdoor tasks, ensuring adequate visibility.
  • Minimization of Glare: Recommendations are included to avoid obtrusive light, which can hinder performance and cause discomfort.
  • Design Flexibility: Designers are encouraged to explore innovative lighting solutions, ensuring that the standard does not constrain creativity.
  • Use of Natural and Electric Lighting: The standard supports the integration of both daylight and artificial lighting to achieve optimal illumination.

These requirements are typically audited through site assessments, visual inspections, and compliance checks against specified illumination levels.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN 12464-2:2024

Implementing SN EN 12464-2:2024 involves several key steps. First, conduct a gap analysis to identify current lighting conditions against the standard's requirements. Next, document findings and develop a comprehensive lighting plan that incorporates both natural and artificial lighting solutions. Training sessions for staff on the importance of lighting in outdoor work settings may follow, promoting awareness and adherence to best practices. An internal audit can help assess compliance before engaging in a certification audit. This structured approach ensures that all aspects of the standard are effectively addressed and implemented in outdoor workplaces.

=== SECTION 5 ===

Related standards

  • EN 12464-1: This standard addresses lighting requirements for indoor workplaces, complementing SN EN 12464-2:2024 by specifying regulations for enclosed environments.
  • EN 1838: Focused on emergency lighting, this standard provides guidelines for ensuring safety in unforeseen circumstances, relevant for outdoor workplaces with emergency protocols.
  • EN 13032-3: This standard pertains to the measurement and presentation of lighting performance, applicable for assessing the effectiveness of outdoor lighting solutions.
  • ISO 8995-1: This standard offers general principles for workplace lighting, including both indoor and outdoor environments, providing a broader context for compliance.
