SN EN 12193:2019 is a critical standard that outlines the requirements for artificial lighting in indoor and outdoor sports facilities widely practiced across Europe. It provides guidance on illuminance levels, light uniformity, glare limitation, and color properties of light sources, ensuring safety and visibility in sports environments.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN 12193:2019 covers

This standard focuses on the specifications for artificial lighting in sports settings, addressing both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. It covers the necessary illuminance levels, uniformity of light distribution, and limitations on glare to enhance visibility and safety for athletes and spectators. The standard does not encompass natural lighting solutions, nor does it cover aspects unrelated to artificial lighting, such as architectural design or facility layout. Additionally, it specifies how to measure these lighting parameters to ensure compliance with its requirements.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN 12193:2019

The standard is relevant to a diverse range of stakeholders within the Domestic & Leisure Equipment industry, including facility managers, lighting designers, sports organizations, and equipment manufacturers. Key requirements

  • Illuminance Levels: The standard specifies minimum illuminance levels required for various sports activities to ensure safety and performance.
  • Uniformity: It establishes guidelines for the uniform distribution of light to minimize shadows and enhance visibility on the playing surface.
  • Glare Limitation: Clear restrictions are outlined regarding the positioning of luminaires to reduce glare for players and spectators.
  • Color Properties: The standard defines acceptable color properties for light sources to ensure optimal visibility and color perception during sports events.
  • Measurement Procedures: It details methods for measuring illuminance, uniformity, and glare to verify compliance with the standard.
  • Emergency Lighting: The document references EN 1838 for requirements related to emergency lighting in sports venues.

These requirements are typically audited through inspections and assessments of the lighting installations to ensure adherence to the established guidelines.

How to implement SN EN 12193:2019

Implementing SN EN 12193:2019 involves several key steps. First, conduct a gap analysis to identify areas where current lighting installations may not meet the standard's requirements. Next, document the findings and develop a plan to address any deficiencies, which may include upgrading equipment or adjusting installation practices. Training staff on the standard’s specifics is crucial to ensure proper implementation and maintenance. Following this, an internal audit should be performed to assess compliance before undergoing a formal certification audit by an authorized body. This structured approach ensures that all aspects of the standard are thoroughly addressed and maintained.
