Explosive atmospheres - Part 36: Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres - Basic method and requirements (ISO 80079-36:2016)

INB

ISO 80079-36:2016 specifies the basic method and requirements for design, construction, testing and marking of non-electrical Ex equipment, Ex Components, protective systems, devices and assemblies of these products that have their own potential ignition sources and are intended for use in explosive atmospheres. Hand tools and manually operated equipment without energy storage are excluded from the scope of this standard. This standard does not address the safety of static autonomous process equipment when it is not part of equipment referred to in this standard. This standard does not specify requirements for safety, other than those directly related to the risk of ignition which may then lead to an explosion. The standard atmospheric conditions (relating to the explosion characteristics of the atmosphere) under which it may be assumed that equipment can be operated are: - temperature -20 °C to 60 °C; - pressure 80 kPa (0,8 bar) to 110 kPa (1,1 bar); and - air with normal oxygen content, typically 21 % v/v. Such atmospheres can also exist inside the equipment. In addition, the external atmosphere can be drawn inside the equipment by natural breathing produced as a result of fluctuations in the equipment's internal operating press

SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 is a standard that outlines the basic methods and requirements for non-electrical equipment used in explosive atmospheres, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Purpose and objectives

The primary objective of SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 is to establish a comprehensive framework for the design, construction, testing, and marking of non-electrical equipment intended for use in environments where explosive atmospheres may occur. This standard aims to enhance safety by providing clear guidelines that assist manufacturers and operators in minimizing explosion risks associated with such equipment. By achieving compliance with these guidelines, organizations can ensure that their products are suitable for safe operation in hazardous conditions, thereby protecting both personnel and property.

Scope: who must comply

SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 applies to manufacturers, suppliers, and users of non-electrical equipment operating in explosive atmospheres across various industries. This includes sectors such as chemical processing, oil and gas, mining, and pharmaceuticals, where equipment may be exposed to flammable gases, vapors, or dust. Companies engaged in electrical engineering also need to consider these guidelines when assessing the safety of their non-electrical equipment used in conjunction with electrical devices in hazardous locations. Compliance is essential for organizations that prioritize safety and regulatory adherence in their operations.

How SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 relates to other standards

SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 is part of a broader framework of standards focusing on explosion prevention and safety in hazardous environments. It complements the following:

  • ISO 13463-1:2009: This standard outlines specific requirements for non-electrical equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres, focusing on construction and design principles.
  • EU Directive 2014/34/EU: This directive governs the equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, ensuring that products meet safety and performance criteria.
  • CEN/TC 305: This Technical Committee develops standards related to equipment and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres, promoting uniform safety practices across Europe.

Revision history and current status

SN EN ISO 80079-36:2016 was published by the International Organization for Standardization and represents the latest revision as of 2016. This revision incorporated significant changes aimed at enhancing clarity and usability, including updates to testing methodologies and marking requirements for non-electrical equipment. These improvements ensure consistency with contemporary safety practices and regulatory frameworks, providing a robust basis for compliance and operational safety.
