SN EN 378-3+A1:2021

Kälteanlagen und Wärmepumpen - Sicherheitstechnische und umweltrelevante Anforderungen - Teil 3: Aufstellungsort und Schutz von Personen

Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Safety and environmental requirements - Part 3: Installation site and personal protection

INB

This European Standard specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants. The term “refrigerating system” used in this European Standard includes heat pumps. This Part 3 of the European Standard is applicable to the installation site (plant space and services). It specifies requirements on the site for safety, which may be needed because of, but not directly connected with, the refrigerating system and its ancillary components. This standard applies: a) to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard e.g. ISO 13043; b) to secondary cooling or heating systems; c) to the location of the refrigerating systems; d) to replaced parts and added components after adoption of this standard if they are not identical in function and in the capacity. Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in of !EN 378 1:2016+A1:2020", Annex E are not covered by this standard. This standard does not apply to goods in storage. This standard is not applicable to refrigerating systems which were manufactured before the date of its publication as a European Standard except for extensions and modifications to the system which were implemented after publication. This standard is applicable to new refrigerating systems, extensions or modifications of already existing systems, and for existing stationary systems, being transferred to and operated on another site. This standard also applies in the case of the conversion of a system for another refrigerant type, in which case conformity with the relevant clauses of parts 1 to 4 of the standard shall be assessed.

The SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 is a European standard focused on the safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems and heat pumps, published by the Schweizerische Normen-Vereinigung (SNV).

Purpose and objectives

The primary aim of SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 is to establish safety and environmental protection guidelines for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. This standard seeks to minimize risks associated with refrigerant leaks and ensure the safe handling of refrigerants, promoting environmentally responsible practices throughout the lifecycle of these systems. By adhering to these guidelines, stakeholders can enhance safety for personnel, prevent environmental damage, and comply with relevant regulations and industry best practices.

Scope: who must comply

SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 applies to various stakeholders within the refrigeration and heat pump industries, including manufacturers, installers, and maintenance personnel. Organizations involved in the design, construction, and operation of refrigerating systems and heat pumps, particularly those that operate in energy and heat transfer contexts, must comply with this standard. This includes industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and HVAC, where efficient and safe refrigerating processes are critical. Compliance ensures that these systems meet established safety benchmarks and environmental regulations.

How SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 relates to other standards

SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 is part of a broader set of standards aimed at ensuring safety and efficiency in refrigeration technologies. Related standards include:

  • EN 378-1: This standard outlines general requirements for refrigeration systems, providing foundational safety principles.
  • ISO 13043: Focuses on refrigerants and their safety considerations, complementing the operational guidelines in SN EN 378-3+A1:2021.
  • F-gas regulation: Addresses the reduction of fluorinated greenhouse gases, which is critical for environmental compliance in refrigerating systems.

Revision history and current status

The SN EN 378-3+A1:2021 was published by the Schweizerische Normen-Vereinigung (SNV) in 2021, following revisions to the earlier EN 378-3:2016+A1:2020. Key changes in this latest revision include enhanced guidelines for personal protection measures, updated operational procedures for refrigerating systems, and refined protocols for refrigerant recovery processes. These updates reflect the ongoing commitment to improving safety and environmental standards in refrigeration technologies.
