SN EN 14470-1:2023 Guidelines for Fire Safety Storage Cabinets
The SN EN 14470-1:2023 is a CEN standard that outlines the performance requirements for fire safety storage cabinets specifically designed for flammable liquids. This standard ensures that such cabinets are constructed to minimize fire hazards and provide adequate protection in various environments.
SN EN 14470-1:2023
Feuerwiderstandsfähige Lagerschränke - Teil 1: Sicherheitsschränke für brennbare Flüssigkeiten
Fire safety storage cabinets - Part 1: Safety storage cabinets for flammable liquids
This document is a product specification, giving performance requirements for fire safety storage cabinets to be used for the storage of flammable liquids. It is applicable to cabinets with a total internal volume of not greater than 2 m3, which can be free standing, restrained to a wall or mounted on plinth or castors. This document does not apply to brick enclosures or walk-in storage rooms. This document does not apply to any support frame or mechanism other than the base which is integral to the fire safety storage cabinet. Requirements are given in respect of the construction of the fire safety storage cabinet and its capacity to resist fire conditions on the outside. A classification of fire safety storage cabinets is given, according to the level of fire resistance offered, and a type test is included, see Annex A. The tests described in this document are type tests. This document does not discriminate between different flammable liquids, which can have considerably different physical properties. Attention is drawn to national regulations, which can apply with regard to the storage of flammable liquids.
Purpose and objectives
The primary objective of the SN EN 14470-1:2023 standard is to establish robust performance criteria for fire safety storage cabinets. It aims to minimize risks associated with the storage of flammable liquids by detailing essential construction requirements, fire resistance standards, and testing protocols. Through these guidelines, the standard seeks to enhance safety in laboratories and workplaces, ensuring that flammable materials are stored in a manner that significantly reduces the likelihood of fire incidents.
Scope: who must comply
The SN EN 14470-1:2023 guidelines apply to manufacturers and suppliers of fire safety storage cabinets across various industries, especially those handling flammable liquids. This includes sectors such as chemical technology, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, and manufacturing. Companies that are involved in the design, production, or use of such cabinets must comply with these standards to ensure the safety of their facilities and personnel. Compliance is crucial not only for safety but also for meeting national regulations and industry best practices.
How SN EN 14470-1:2023 relates to other standards
The SN EN 14470-1:2023 standard is part of a broader framework of safety regulations. Related standards include:
- ISO 9001: Quality management systems, which ensure that products meet customer and regulatory requirements.
- ISO 14001: Environmental management systems, focusing on minimizing environmental impact during production.
- EN 13374: Temporary edge protection systems, which can complement safety measures in construction environments.
Revision history and current status
The current revision of the SN EN 14470-1 was published in 2023 by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The latest updates include clarifications on construction materials, enhanced fire resistance testing protocols, and improved requirements for spill containment and ventilation. These changes ensure that the standard remains relevant and effective in promoting safety in environments that store flammable liquids.
