Welding, brazing, soldering and cutting - Nomenclature of processes and reference numbers (ISO 4063:2023)

SWISSMEM

This document establishes a nomenclature for: —    welding; —    brazing, soldering and weld brazing; —    thermal cutting; with each process identified by a reference number. It covers the main processes (one digit), groups (two digits) and sub-groups (three digits). The reference number for any process has a maximum of three digits. This system is intended as an aid in computerization and the drafting of, for example, drawings, working papers and welding procedure specifications, and enables the uniform international designation of the processes. This document does not cover all process variants. The process numbers can be supplemented with additional information for variants not listed.

The SN EN ISO 4063:2023 standard overview is crucial for organizations aiming to enhance their operational efficiency and compliance in welding and cutting processes. This guide provides insights into the implementation, compliance requirements, and practical steps to fulfill the standards set forth by SN EN ISO 4063:2023.

Why implement SN EN ISO 4063:2023 now

Implementing the SN EN ISO 4063:2023 is essential for businesses in the Manufacturing Engineering industry due to various driving factors. Customer requirements often dictate the need for adherence to standardized processes, particularly for companies competing in global markets. Additionally, regulatory pressures aim to ensure safety and quality, prompting organizations to adopt recognized standards. Furthermore, internal quality goals push businesses to enhance operational efficiency and product reliability, making compliance with SN EN ISO 4063:2023 a strategic priority.

Prerequisites and readiness check

Before embarking on the journey to implement SN EN ISO 4063:2023, organizations must ensure they are adequately prepared. Key prerequisites include:

  • Management commitment: Leadership must endorse the initiative.
  • Resource allocation: Ensure availability of financial and human resources.
  • Current process documentation: Existing workflows must be documented for reference.
  • Training programs: Staff should be prepared for necessary training sessions.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Involve relevant parties early to promote buy-in.

Step 1: Gap analysis

Conducting a gap analysis against SN EN ISO 4063:2023 is a critical first step in implementation. This process involves comparing current welding, brazing, soldering, and cutting practices with the standards outlined in the document. Key inputs for the analysis include existing documentation, process flows, and compliance records. During the gap analysis, organizations should identify discrepancies and areas for improvement, often revealing outdated or non-compliant practices. Tools such as checklists and benchmarking against industry best practices can facilitate this analysis, enabling organizations to develop actionable insights for alignment with SN EN ISO 4063:2023.

Step 2: Design and documentation

Documenting the management system is crucial for successful compliance with SN EN ISO 4063:2023. This documentation should include:

  • Scope statement: Define the extent and boundaries of the management system.
  • Policy: Establish a clear policy reflecting commitment to quality and standards.
  • Objectives: Set measurable objectives aligned with the SN EN ISO 4063:2023 requirements.
  • Procedures: Develop documented procedures for each process, referencing relevant clauses from the standard.
  • Records: Maintain records of compliance, training, and process performance to demonstrate adherence.

Each of these components should be meticulously crafted to satisfy the specific clauses of the SN EN ISO 4063:2023, ensuring a comprehensive management approach.

Step 3: Implementation and training

The rollout of the SN EN ISO 4063:2023 compliance system requires effective change management and staff training. Organizations should develop a structured implementation plan that addresses the necessary changes in processes and practices. Training sessions should be tailored to educate staff on the new standards, emphasizing the importance of compliance in their daily operations. Common pitfalls include lack of engagement from employees, insufficient training, and failure to monitor progress. By proactively addressing these issues, organizations can foster a culture of compliance and continuous improvement.

Step 4: Internal audit and certification

Internal audits play a vital role in verifying compliance with SN EN ISO 4063:2023. These audits should be planned and conducted regularly, focusing on both documentation and implementation. The certification audit consists of two stages:

  1. Stage 1: Documentation review to assess the adequacy of the management system against the standard.
  2. Stage 2: Implementation review to evaluate whether the processes are followed as documented and meet the requirements of SN EN ISO 4063:2023.

Successful completion of these stages will lead to certification, affirming the organization’s commitment to quality and compliance.

Common pitfalls

Organizations often encounter challenges during the implementation of SN EN ISO 4063:2023. Here are some common mistakes and their fixes:

  • Inadequate management support: Ensure visible leadership commitment.
  • Insufficient training: Develop a comprehensive training plan for all staff.
  • Neglecting documentation: Regularly update and maintain all compliance documentation.
  • Ignoring employee feedback: Engage staff in the process to gather valuable insights.
  • Failure to monitor progress: Establish a review system to track compliance metrics.
