Overview of SN EN ISO 20607:2019 - Safety of Machinery Instruction Handbook
SN EN ISO 20607:2019
Sicherheit von Maschinen - Betriebsanleitung - Allgemeine Gestaltungsgrundsätze (ISO 20607:2019)
Safety of machinery - Instruction handbook - General drafting principles (ISO 20607:2019)
This European Standard specifies requirements for the machine manufacturer on drafting an instruction handbook. This International Standard provides added value to the general requirements on information for use given in EN ISO 12100:2010, 6.4, and deals with the safety-related content, the corresponding structure and presentation of the instruction handbook, taking into account the whole lifecycle of the machine. If an instruction handbook is required, this International Standard establishes the principles which are indispensable, to avoid a lack of information in particular those on possible residual risks. This International Standard is applicable for preparation of an instruction handbook of machinery.
=== SECTION 1 ===
What SN EN ISO 20607:2019 covers
SN EN ISO 20607:2019 specifies requirements for machine manufacturers regarding the drafting of instruction handbooks. The standard focuses on ensuring that these manuals contain comprehensive safety-related information, including but not limited to operational instructions, maintenance guidelines, and risk assessments. It emphasizes the importance of addressing potential residual risks that may not be eliminated through design and manufacturing processes. The standard's scope includes all machinery types, provided they require an instruction handbook, and it excludes considerations such as noise and vibration emissions, which are covered under other regulations.
=== SECTION 2 ===
Who needs to comply with SN EN ISO 20607:2019
This standard is essential for machine manufacturers across various industries, notably those in the Environment, Health & Safety sector. Organizations of all sizes, from small enterprises to large multinational corporations, must adhere to its principles. The roles involved typically include product designers, safety engineers, and compliance officers, all of whom contribute to the creation and dissemination of instruction handbooks. Compliance ensures that these key players provide clear and effective information to end-users, thereby reducing risks associated with machinery operation.
=== SECTION 3 ===
Key requirements
- Safety-related content: Instruction handbooks must include comprehensive information on safety, addressing potential hazards and residual risks.
- Structure and presentation: The layout of the handbook should be logical and user-friendly, ensuring that critical safety information is easily accessible.
- Life cycle considerations: The standard requires that the handbook reflects the entire lifecycle of the machinery, from design through operation to decommissioning.
- User information specifications: There are guidelines for tailoring content based on the intended audience, ensuring clarity and relevance.
- Compliance with ISO 12100:2010: This standard complements ISO 12100 by providing detailed drafting principles for instructional materials. Audits typically assess compliance with these key requirements through document reviews and user feedback evaluations.
=== SECTION 4 ===
How to implement SN EN ISO 20607:2019
To implement SN EN ISO 20607:2019 effectively, organizations should start with a gap analysis to identify areas for improvement in existing instruction handbooks. This is followed by documenting revised procedures and creating new or updated manuals that align with the standard's requirements. Training sessions for relevant staff ensure everyone understands the new processes and expectations. Organizations should conduct internal audits to verify compliance and readiness before undergoing a certification audit by an accredited body. This structured approach helps ensure that all safety-related content is adequately addressed and communicated.
=== SECTION 5 ===
Related standards
- ISO 12100:2010: Provides general principles for risk assessment and risk reduction, fundamental to safety in machinery design.
- ISO 13849-1: Focuses on the design of safety-related parts of control systems, complementing the drafting principles in SN EN ISO 20607:2019.
- ISO 14121-1: Addresses risk assessment for machinery, ensuring that safety measures are effectively incorporated into instruction handbooks.
- EN 60204-1: Concerns the safety of electrical equipment of machines, which must be reflected in the instruction materials. These standards collectively support a comprehensive approach to machinery safety.
=== SECTION 6 ===
Why SN EN ISO 20607:2019 matters
Adhering to SN EN ISO 20607:2019 not only enhances safety and compliance in machinery operation but also provides a competitive advantage in the marketplace. It fosters customer trust by demonstrating a commitment to safety standards, thereby facilitating market access and legal compliance.
