SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019

Reinigungs-Desinfektionsgeräte - Teil 4: Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren für Reinigungs-Desinfektionsgeräte mit chemischer Desinfektion für thermolabile Endoskope (ISO 15883-4:2018)

Washer-disinfectors - Part 4: Requirements and tests for washer-disinfectors employing chemical disinfection for thermolabile endoscopes (ISO 15883-4:2018)

INB

This document specifies the particular requirements, including performance criteria for washer-disinfectors (WD) that are intended to be used for cleaning and chemical disinfection of thermolabile endoscopes. This document also specifies the performance requirements for the cleaning and disinfection of the washer-disinfector and its components and accessories which can be required to achieve the necessary performance criteria. The methods, instrumentation and instructions required for type testing, works testing, validation (installation, operational and performance qualification on first installation), routine control and monitoring, and requalification of WD periodically and after essential repairs, are also specified. NOTE 1 In addition, Annex A gives guidance on an appropriate division of responsibility for the range of activities covered by this document. NOTE 2 WD complying with this document can also be used for cleaning and chemical disinfection of other thermolabile re-usable medical devices for which the device manufacturer has recommended and validated this method of disinfection. WD complying with the requirements of this document are not intended for cleaning and disinfection of medical devices, including endoscopic accessories, which are heat stable and can be disinfected or sterilized by thermal methods (see ISO 15883-1:2006+Amd 1:2014, 4.1.5). The specified performance requirements of this document do not ensure the inactivation or removal of the causative agent(s) (prion protein) of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. NOTE 3 If it is considered that prion protein might be present, particular care is needed in the choice of cleaning agents and disinfectants to ensure that the chemicals used do not react with the prion protein and/or other protein in a manner that can inhibit its removal or inactivation from the load or washer-disinfector. NOTE 4 This document can be used by prospective purchasers and manufacturers as the basis of agreement on the specification of the WD, manufacturers of endoscopes, cleaning products, and disinfecting products.

SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019, titled "Washer-disinfectors - Part 4: Requirements and tests for washer-disinfectors employing chemical disinfection for thermolabile endoscopes (ISO 15883-4:2018)," establishes critical standards for washer-disinfectors intended for the cleaning and chemical disinfection of thermolabile endoscopes. This standard is essential for healthcare technology professionals involved in reprocessing medical devices.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019 covers

SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019 specifies the requirements for washer-disinfectors (WD) that utilize chemical disinfection methods tailored for thermolabile endoscopes. It outlines performance criteria necessary to ensure effective cleaning and disinfection, including the validation processes for the washer-disinfector, its components, and accessories. The standard also details the type testing and routine monitoring necessary for compliance and effectiveness. Notably, it excludes washer-disinfectors intended for heat-stable medical devices, which can undergo thermal disinfection or sterilization. Additionally, the standard addresses concerns regarding prion proteins, emphasizing careful selection of cleaning agents and disinfectants.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019

Compliance with SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019 is crucial for various stakeholders within the healthcare technology industry. This includes manufacturers of washer-disinfectors, medical device producers, and suppliers of cleaning and disinfecting agents. Hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities that employ thermolabile endoscopes and related medical devices also fall within the scope of this standard. Roles such as quality assurance managers, compliance officers, and clinical engineering professionals will find this standard relevant in ensuring that their processes meet regulatory and safety requirements.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Performance Criteria: Establishes specific performance benchmarks for washer-disinfectors to ensure they effectively clean and disinfect thermolabile endoscopes.
  • Type Testing: Outlines the methods for type testing washer-disinfectors to validate their performance before they are put into use.
  • Routine Control and Monitoring: Specifies procedures for ongoing monitoring and control to maintain compliance and performance standards.
  • Validation: Details the requirements for validating installation, operational, and performance qualifications during initial setup and periodic re-evaluation.
  • Responsibilities: Highlights the division of responsibilities among manufacturers, purchasers, and healthcare facilities to ensure comprehensive compliance with the standard.

The compliance of these requirements is typically audited through third-party inspections and internal quality assurance processes, ensuring adherence to the established performance criteria.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019

Implementing SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019 involves several key steps to ensure compliance and effectiveness. Organizations should begin with a gap analysis to identify current practices against the standard's requirements. Following this, comprehensive documentation should be created or updated to reflect compliance processes. Training sessions for staff should ensure that all personnel are aware of their responsibilities under the standard. Regular internal audits should be conducted to assess adherence and highlight areas for improvement. Finally, organizations should prepare for a certification audit to validate their compliance with SN EN ISO 15883-4:2019, ensuring that all measures are in place to meet the standard's requirements.
