Understanding SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 for Machinery Safety

SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016

Sicherheit von Maschinen - Ortsfeste Zugänge zu maschinellen Anlagen - Teil 3: Treppen, Treppenleitern und Geländer (ISO 14122-3:2016)

Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails (ISO 14122-3:2016)

SWISSMEM

ISO 14122-3:2016 gives requirements for non-powered stairs, stepladders and guard-rails which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, slidable) and movable parts of those fixed means of access. NOTE 1 "Fixed" means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed by the use of tools. ISO 14122-3:2016 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. stairs, stepladders, guard-rails) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine. NOTE 2 Where no local regulation or standards exists, this part of ISO 14122 may be used also for means of access which are outside the scope of the standard. It is intended that this part of ISO 14122 be used with ISO 14122-1 to give the requirements for steps, stepladders and guard-rails. The ISO 14122 series as a whole is applicable to both stationary and mobile machinery where fixed means of access are necessary. It is not applicable to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or oth

SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 (Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails) is a vital standard that outlines safety requirements for non-powered means of access to machinery. It is applicable to various industries where machinery operations are prevalent, ensuring safe access for personnel.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 covers

SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 specifies requirements for the design and construction of non-powered stairs, stepladders, and guard-rails used as permanent means of access to stationary machines. This standard is crucial for ensuring that such access points are safe and reliable for operators and maintenance personnel. The standard also covers non-powered adjustable parts, such as foldable or slidable components, which are integral to fixed means of access. It is important to note that powered means of access, like lifts or escalators, are explicitly excluded from this standard, focusing instead on those access methods that require no external power source. Additionally, the standard applies when the access means are part of building or civil constructions where the main function is to facilitate access to machinery.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016

The primary audience for SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 includes manufacturers, engineers, and safety professionals in industries that utilize machinery requiring safe access, such as manufacturing, construction, and equipment maintenance. This standard is particularly relevant for organizations of all sizes that seek to enhance their safety protocols and maintain compliance with environmental health and safety regulations. Roles that may find this standard applicable include safety officers, compliance managers, and facility engineers. By adhering to this standard, these stakeholders can ensure that their operations meet safety requirements, thereby protecting workers and reducing liability.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Design Requirements: Stairs and stepladders must be designed to provide safe access and egress, ensuring stability and adequate support.
  • Guard-rail Specifications: Guard-rails must be installed at appropriate locations to prevent falls and provide necessary support to users.
  • Adjustability and Movability: Non-powered adjustable parts should be designed to function safely without the risk of accidental disengagement.
  • Integration with Construction: When stairs and stepladders are part of a larger construction, they must comply with both the standard and applicable building regulations.
  • Maintenance Considerations: Regular inspections and maintenance procedures should be established to ensure ongoing compliance and safety of access means.

These requirements are typically audited through regular safety assessments and compliance checks by internal or external auditors to ensure adherence to the standards set forth by ISO.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016

Implementing SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 involves a systematic approach to ensure compliance and safety. The typical steps include conducting a gap analysis to identify existing deficiencies in current access means, followed by thorough documentation of compliance processes and designs. Training sessions for employees on the importance of safety measures and correct usage of access means should be held. An internal audit will help assess the effectiveness of the implementation, leading to necessary adjustments. Finally, an external certification audit may be conducted to validate compliance with SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016, ensuring that all safety standards are met and maintained.

=== SECTION 5 ===

Related standards

  • ISO 14122-1: This part of the ISO 14122 series provides requirements for the general safety of access means to machinery, laying the groundwork for standards in subsequent parts.
  • ISO 14122-2: This standard addresses the requirements for fixed ladders, further complementing SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 by ensuring comprehensive safety measures for all types of access means.
  • Directive 2006/42/CE: This European directive outlines machinery safety requirements, under which SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 is aligned to ensure comprehensive safety compliance in the machinery sector.
  • EN ISO 13922: This standard pertains to the safety of accessible work areas, providing additional guidelines related to the placement and safety of access means in industrial environments.

=== SECTION 6 ===

Why SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 matters

Adhering to SN EN ISO 14122-3:2016 is critical for organizations seeking to enhance workplace safety, reduce potential liability, and ensure compliance with legal standards. Implementing this standard can provide a competitive advantage by demonstrating a commitment to safety and reliability, which can enhance customer trust and facilitate market access. Organizations that prioritize these safety measures are better positioned to protect their workforce and maintain operational integrity.
