Comprehensive Overview of SN EN 15635:2009
SN EN 15635:2009
Ortsfeste Regalsysteme aus Stahl - Anwendung und Wartung von Lagereinrichtungen
Steel static storage systems - Application and maintenance of storage equipment
This European Standard gives guidelines for operational aspects relevant to structural safety of storage systems. Such systems operate with heavy mechanical handling equipment working in close proximity to static storage equipment. This European Standard minimizes the risk and consequences of unsafe operation or damage to the structure. Some other forms of storage equipment are only partially covered and further consideration, beyond the scope of this European Standard, can be required. This European Standard gives guidance in conjunction with prEN 15512, EN 15620, and EN 15629 to ensure that the specifier, user and designer are aware of the constraints in each other’s area to allow a safe design to be produced. This European Standard specifically excludes storage equipment manufactured form materials other than steel (except for certain accessories) and equipment intended to be used for domestic storage purposes.

What SN EN 15635:2009 covers
SN EN 15635:2009 outlines guidelines focusing on the operational safety of steel static storage systems, emphasizing the structural integrity and maintenance of storage equipment. It addresses the design, installation, and operational practices necessary to minimize risks associated with the close operation of heavy machinery near static storage units. The standard specifically pertains to steel storage systems and excludes those made from other materials, except for certain accessories. Additionally, it does not cover storage solutions intended for domestic use. By providing a comprehensive framework, this standard ensures that users, designers, and specifiers can navigate the complexities of storage system safety effectively.

Who needs to comply with SN EN 15635:2009
The SN EN 15635:2009 standard is crucial for a diverse audience within the materials handling industry. This includes manufacturers, operators, and maintenance personnel involved in the design, installation, and operation of steel static storage systems. Companies of all sizes—from small businesses to large enterprises—are impacted, particularly those that handle heavy goods and materials storage. Roles that engage directly with storage equipment, such as warehouse managers and safety officers, must familiarize themselves with this standard to ensure compliance and safety in their operations.
=== SECTION 3 ===
Key requirements
- Structural Safety Guidelines: The standard provides essential guidelines to ensure the structural safety of storage systems, thus minimizing risks during operation.
- Operational Practices: It outlines best practices for safe operation, including load handling and equipment maintenance.
- Training Requirements: Emphasizes the importance of training for personnel to operate and maintain storage systems safely.
- Inspection and Maintenance Protocols: Specifies regular inspection and maintenance protocols to uphold safety standards and ensure compliance.
- Documentation and Records: Mandates maintaining accurate documentation of all inspections, maintenance, and modifications to the storage systems.
These requirements are typically audited through regular compliance checks and safety inspections conducted by qualified personnel.

How to implement SN EN 15635:2009
Implementing SN EN 15635:2009 involves several critical steps. Organizations can begin with a gap analysis to assess current practices against the standard's requirements. Following this, documentation should be developed or updated to reflect compliance protocols and safety measures. Training sessions for all relevant personnel are crucial to ensure understanding and adherence to the guidelines laid out in the standard. Internal audits should be conducted periodically to verify compliance and identify areas for improvement. Finally, a certification audit can be pursued to formally demonstrate adherence to the standard, enhancing the organization's reputation and operational safety.
