Overview of SN EN 12464-2:2014 - Lighting of Outdoor Work Places

SN EN 12464-2:2014

Licht und Beleuchtung - Beleuchtung von Arbeitsstätten - Teil 2: Arbeitsplätze im Freien

Light and lighting - Lighting of work places - Part 2: Outdoor work places

INB

This European Standard specifies lighting requirements for outdoor work places, which meet the needs for visual comfort and performance. All usual visual tasks are considered. This European Standard is not applicable for emergency lighting; see EN 1838 and EN 13032-3. This European Standard does not specify lighting requirements with respect to the safety and health of workers at work and has not been prepared in the field of application of Article 153 of the EC treaty, although the lighting requirements, as specified in this standard, usually fulfil safety needs. Lighting requirements with respect to the safety and health of workers at work may be contained in Directives based on Article 153 of the EC treaty, in national legislation of member states implementing these directives or in other national legislation of member states. This European Standard neither provides specific solutions, nor restricts the designer’s freedom from exploring new techniques nor restricts the use of innovative equipment.

This European Standard, SN EN 12464-2:2014, specifies the lighting requirements for outdoor workplaces, catering to the needs of visual comfort and performance. It is relevant for various stakeholders in the construction materials and buildings sector, emphasizing effective illumination for various visual tasks.

=== SECTION 1 ===

What SN EN 12464-2:2014 covers

SN EN 12464-2:2014 delineates the lighting criteria necessary for outdoor work environments, ensuring that visual tasks can be performed comfortably and effectively. The standard addresses several aspects of outdoor lighting design, including luminance distribution, glare control, and illuminance levels for different activities. However, it is crucial to note that the standard does not cover emergency lighting requirements, which are addressed in separate standards such as EN 1838. Furthermore, while it indirectly supports worker safety by enhancing visibility, it does not provide specific health and safety guidelines under the purview of Article 153 of the EC treaty.

=== SECTION 2 ===

Who needs to comply with SN EN 12464-2:2014

The primary audience for SN EN 12464-2:2014 includes professionals and organizations involved in the construction materials and buildings industry. This encompasses architects, lighting designers, project managers, facility managers, and construction companies of various sizes. Compliance with this standard is critical for any entity responsible for designing or operating outdoor workplaces, ensuring that they meet regulatory expectations and provide suitable lighting conditions for workers engaged in outdoor tasks.

=== SECTION 3 ===

Key requirements

  • Illuminance Levels: Specifies minimum illuminance levels for various outdoor work tasks to ensure adequate visibility.
  • Luminance Distribution: Outlines requirements for uniform light distribution to minimize visual discomfort.
  • Glare Control: Provides guidelines to reduce glare and improve visual comfort in outdoor environments.
  • Color Aspects: Addresses the importance of color rendering and its impact on visual tasks in outdoor settings.
  • Light Pollution: Encourages designs that minimize light pollution, balancing functional illumination with environmental considerations.

These requirements are typically audited through on-site assessments, where compliance with the specified lighting criteria is verified against the standards set forth in SN EN 12464-2:2014.

=== SECTION 4 ===

How to implement SN EN 12464-2:2014

Implementing SN EN 12464-2:2014 involves several structured steps. Initially, organizations should conduct a gap analysis to assess current lighting conditions against the standard's requirements. This is followed by comprehensive documentation of existing lighting designs and practices. Training sessions should be organized to equip relevant personnel with knowledge of the standard's provisions and best practices. An internal audit can then be conducted to review compliance and identify areas for improvement. Finally, a certification audit may be undertaken to validate adherence to the standard and enhance credibility within the industry. Each step is crucial for ensuring the effective application of the standard while promoting a safer and more efficient outdoor work environment.
