Understanding ISO 14064-1:2018 Guidelines for Greenhouse Gas Reporting
SN EN ISO 14064-1:2019
Treibhausgase - Teil 1: Spezifikation mit Anleitung zur quantitativen Bestimmung und Berichterstattung von Treibhausgasemissionen und Entzug von Treibhausgasen auf Organisationsebene (ISO 14064-1:2018)
Greenhouse gases - Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals (ISO 14064-1:2018)
This document specifies principles and requirements at the organization level for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization´s GHG inventory. The ISO 14064 series is GHG programme neutral. If a GHG programme is applicable, requirements of that GHG programme are additional to the requirements of the ISO 14064 series.
SN EN ISO 14064-1:2019 provides a comprehensive framework for organizations to quantify and report greenhouse gas emissions and removals, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Purpose and objectives
The primary purpose of ISO 14064-1:2018 guidelines is to establish a standardized approach for organizations to quantify and report their greenhouse gas emissions and removals. This standard aims to enhance transparency and consistency in greenhouse gas accounting, enabling organizations to effectively manage their environmental impact. The guidelines also support organizations in demonstrating compliance with regulatory requirements and achieving sustainability goals, ultimately contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
Scope: who must comply
ISO 14064-1:2018 applies to a wide range of organizations, including public and private entities across various sectors such as manufacturing, energy, transportation, and agriculture. It is particularly relevant for organizations seeking to establish or improve their greenhouse gas management systems and reporting processes. Compliance with these guidelines is essential for organizations striving to meet environmental regulations and health and safety standards, as it fosters accountability and transparency in their greenhouse gas emissions reporting.
How SN EN ISO 14064-1:2019 relates to other standards
ISO 14064-1:2018 is part of the ISO 14064 family, which includes:
- ISO 14064-2: Guidelines for quantifying and reporting project-level greenhouse gas reductions.
- ISO 14064-3: Guidelines for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas assertions.
- ISO 14001: Environmental management system standards that complement greenhouse gas reporting by providing a broader framework for environmental performance.
Revision history and current status
The current revision of the standard, ISO 14064-1:2019, was published by ISO in 2019, updating the previous version from 2018. The most significant changes in this revision include clarifications in the reporting requirements and enhanced guidance on the management of greenhouse gas inventories, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of the reporting process.
